And I just sort of fell back into my life. I've been collecting material for it. With what you make off the old stuff, could you afford to retire at this point? We lived together when I first joined the band. Of course, there are days when no matter how much waririing up you've done, your mind still doesn't want to do anything. I said, Im gonna get it done. I found that I liked using two bass drums. Its called a band! Did you feel like Journey had run its course? Right? I didnt have that under my belt. I walk onstage. He was!. You were never cool. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. But I've taught Scotty Ross how to do it as well, and he's quite good at it. So I have a lawsuit against them. I said, . And the bigger drum doesn't give you any more sound on stage. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. In 1973 he also recorded Lou Reed's album Berlin with Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, and Tony Levin. There was something that we had together that I think neither of us have been able to find anywhere else. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. **. He was Ringo's chauffeur and funny enough, he played bass. At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time. But they went on to make a lot of money. It was like being on a baseball team. In January 1987, it was . I also played with Jimi Hendrix. I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa. We actually never even quit. So it can make any singer a little crazy. Aynsley Dunbar currently tours with Eric Burdon and The New Animals. It's easy to keep going at a high level of intensity for a four- minute solo, and just go through fast and end it. They were gonna go do their thing. But then, the grass is always greener. For about 5 years, every day I'd get out of bed and do exercises, and then I'd do one arm push-ups to pump blood into my arms before I went on stage. This is what I wanna do. Read Full Biography. How did it feel to be told that you needed to change what you were doing? There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. Now, have I perjured myself? I was part of a band that saved my life. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. Then one day a few years later it would finally turn up. The Retaliation are rated by many blues aficionados as one the three greatest British Blues bands, along with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall s Bluesbreakers. **When you started your solo career, was that the beginning of the end for Journey? He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. I came off stage feeling perfectly happy and wonderful, whereas I used to come off stage being on the very edge. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. So youre not enjoined from discussing him in public? We mastered the record. His solos are always very musical and he always has something new to say. And what that meant was that there was a period of time where I always felt, from Neal, that I had to prove myself worthy of the position I was trying to occupy in the group. Im not whining. When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. I got a message that Frank wanted to sit in. In 1974 after having recorded twelve albums in two years Aynsley was acclaimed by the music industry as the world's leading session musician. And I ran out of the coffee shop and said, I gotta get in on this. [laughs] She looked up, her eyes got like saucers. AD: In my solo, yeah. I had always sort of planned to go, but I wasnt sure I was gonna go, you know what I mean? Most of them are in L.A. RM: How did your professional career develop? You had that urge, but you didnt act on it. "Despite his image, Zappa was a very conservative chap," according to de Strulle who said that Zappa disapproved of Dunbar's sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll lifestyle. ManagementHerbie was freakin out, he was lovin it. We were all ready to roll. I go there, from time to time, when Im in town. And so I think Ill play, probably until the day I die. And I think that we accomplished a lot together. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. Giving me high fives. But thats okay. I'm not that disciplined. I'm using those new Quick- Beat hi-hats, with no bell on the bottom and holes drilled in it. It feels better. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. Which in those days was not good. With their 1978 breakthrough album, Infinity, some rock writers even today attempt to reduce the remarkable transformation by the San Francisco band Journey as "talented, veteran, but commercially struggling group hires world-class singer, which anybody would recognize; shortens song arrangements; and instantly becomes the biggest band in America". Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. I really had to let it all go. Dunbar began his career. I just sort of rid of a lot of demons that were inside of me. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. Whose decision was it? I went along with it. It sounds progressive, and Neals singin on it, he obviously doesnt sing like you. But that was his open door, to go do it, and that was sort of the beginning of the demise. AD: On. Ross Valory had played with Steve Miller and people like that, I didnt have that. Would you saythat your style has changed over the years or is it just the difference in the music you are playing? And we still waited, even though we had things goin on. **. Zappa let me do whatever I wanted to with it, so I played like a frustrated drummer. I was completely overawed by Peter Green's playing, but I didn't think the band was backing him properly. So I'm setting up a situation now where I'm going to be wearing headphones and have a live mic in the room, and also have a click track. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. By just having the snare drum first, I spent more time practicing the basics. That lineup of Journey ended up becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. Be at my house at so- and-so, and have your drums there and we'll go up to the gig." As bizarre as it sounds, I felt like nothing had ever happened, like our arc of success almost didnt exist. What happened? I gotta go out there and try to get in this business. _[laughs] _Before its too late! And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. So fine-I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. He is the major soloist in the band. **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. Did you take lessons? But the truth is, no. We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. The Melody Maker called it An exceptional debut in it s enthusiastic review at the time. Otherwise we dont think that we can ever get anything on the radio. They wanted us to get on the radio. Oh, yknowtheres no legal issue with talking about him. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? AD: There's always the chance. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. Cause you know, they had a singer before me, named Robert Fleischmann. Afterbeing with them for 3 years, I'm still having a good time. So, yeah. But some- times I can just close my eyes and let him ride out awhile. Your activity looks suspicious to us. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. I moved over there. And occasionally when I get up to Los Angeles, sometimes Ill go out on the weekend, and some of these clubs, manthis new generation in the clubs, man, theyre playing this song, and when it comes on theyre screaming it out to each other. We started trying to put back the original band, with Ross and Smith. Oh, yeah, cause it was so successful. Ask me the question again? Bob Welch: Three Hearts Up His Sleeve But Im embracing it. AD: Ludwig. I think it was in Denver, Coloradothey were opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the time. Yeah, the Oh Sherrie record. Weve had our problems too, but if it wasnt for Herbie, I woulda had no chance, to sing on that grand stage. And by the end of that tour, I was toast. They wanted me to play note for note behind them, and I wouldn't do it. And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid. AD: Yes I did, at one point. AD: I never had any problem. Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. AD: I stay away from commercials. And so we were basically known as a touring band. Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink. They werent sure about any of it. Was that the last time you saw them? It worked out better because if I'd had the whole drum kit, it might have been too much all at one time to under- stand. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. Sure. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. And I was not gonna be part of that. Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. _, **GQ: The first three Journey albums sound like the work of a completely different band. The only time in my life I ever did was that time I was forced into it when the rest of the band was at the bar drinking. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. Did they give you any advice? Aynsley Dunbar: Let There Be Drums!. [Journey] was his band. We were all lovin it. Then It Changed My Life. He'd just call out a song and tell me whether it was a shuffle or whatever, and give me a nod if there was a break. The movie Monster, that Patty Jenkins wrote and directed, with Charlize Theron, was an amazing use of [Dont Stop Believin ]. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. I guess its because maybe Id found a life. I was in Hawaii. All these years, its funnyI never really felt part of it. What they took out, edit-wise, was that[long pause] I gotta think about how to say this. And when it parks back out in the audience, at the end of the song, I walk offstage. But I don't think there are too many people in San Francisco that I want teaching me. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. It sounded good. Never go as a musician because it doesn't work. Cause hes brilliant. Yknow? Eric wasnt up to it. The less you play, the more they hear. I was the new kid in town. Sopranos! Its like, What the fuck? It was unbelievably cool. And he will not allow me to have his number. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. **Do you think thats why the press didnt like you? In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. "You believe that financial . What did you mean when you said, on that VH1 special, that youd never really felt like part of the band? Its been a love-hate thing. If you. I loved touring. RM: Are there any particular drummers whose solos you like? Because they said we all sounded alike. So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group. Gretchen H v. Aynsley Dunbar, Court Case No. I got a panic in me. This has to do with Kiss having a certain sound and style. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." I practically learned to play them on stage. I'll keep going and see if I can get anything else out of it." They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band. And I went on a hike, one I had done many times before this incredible trail, its pretty intense. Aynsley Thomas Dunbar : British drummer, band leader. The girls are screaming Just a small-town girl. Most of them get bored by it. So he sat in on two songs and then he came back and sat in my car and started chatting about session work in Los Angeles and how much money could be made and how I could make a good living out of it. NEAL SCHON: We had run our course doing what we were doing, and what we started out being. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. But it's hard to teach kids that. leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. In the winter of 1969 Retaliation appeared at the 5-day Actuel Festival, which was also attended by Frank Zappa . And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didnt want to have a singer out front. Mmm-hmm. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. 'This is how it is and this is the God's truth and believe me, this is the way you should do it." I know that sounds intense, but I had to take care of myself. _[laughs] _Having people love you every night is a beautiful way to run away from things. An interview with one of Mayall's first guitar players, Roger Dean: Interview Ainsley Dunbar He appeared on numerous Mayall recordings, including A Hard Road and Looking Back . but you were never a critics band. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. I played with him for nearly three years and had a great time. You think? And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. But I personally thought it was dumb. So, yeah. So he and I interact the most on stage. Okay. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. It was a bit of a learning curve, for me. And Tony Newman - a wild man! When I get involved in something I like to keep it going, day by day. **. Because I thought that we were big already, that we didnt need a video game. There are different ways you can work it. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. So I'm up there playing away and I decided it was time l finished, and all of a sudden. Well, it felt great to be free. No, I didnt. In the beginning, it felt extremely freeing. I use traditional grip when I'm playing anything other than rock and roll, because rock and roll doesn't call for a lot of notes. When they were uncertain. And I hope you print that, because its important that people know that. You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. He gave me the back bedroom at his place. AD: Sink would be the word. And so I thought that was okay. I didn't have that under my belt. But some little old woman could have walked in. So its always a fine, artful dance. **Did you just realize at some point that you needed a frontman? It was really great. And theyre good. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. And I felt that we still had wings, yknow? I just wanna quit. The moment a singer gets one callus, hes finished. And then when they started editing with the lyricslike on Just a small-town girl, theyre cuttin across to the wife, and theyre cuttin to everybody, as appropriately as the lyrics canwow. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. So everything was really out of date. [After the Raised on Radio tour] Steve Perry just came up and said, Look, Im burnt, Im toast, I need to take a rest. And so in the middle of a tour, he just pulled out. The remaining members of Jefferson Starship rebuilt the band in early 1979, adding drummer Aynsley Dunbar in January and vocalist Mickey Thomas in April. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. But Im just not in it for the money. The guitar solos are note for note just like the album. AD: It was sort of progressive rock. If you watch the [Behind the Music] documentary on VH1its pretty much one-sided, with Perry, the way they edited that thing, but there was a couple funny things that went down in that interview. They don't understand it. It was a wonderful experience. After talking to Jon and Neal, I went back to my home town for a while, and I started doing things that people didnt understand. The one thing that was good was that it allotted me some time to get some personal issues in order with myself. I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. I had a lot of double kicking happening and it almost sounds like there were two bass drums being used. And thats great. On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. I was the one who really wanted to do it. So you were always opposed to that stuff? Did you feel betrayed, by the fact that theyd been looking at other vocalists? RM: Not too many rock drummers use 20" bass drums. Yeah. And Im off Sony for the first time since 78. I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. You can play as much as you want when it comes to solos, but when you're playing behind vocals, you don't want to be scratching around all over the place. And to a degree I guess we are. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? Because then I started to become a medical guy. I wasnt really into jamming too much. But before that it was ridiculous. But most of the time I had a free hand. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. AD: No, I haven't. GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. I think thats getting a little into the area of conjecture. ), blues, rock, and hard rock. Like, Gee whiz, you have a Lamborghini, so you mustve been big. I didnt understand that. Youd think that after a while, everybody would grow up and be able to talk, one on one. The album was released in 1968 in Canada, France, Sweden, the UK, and the US with a limited re-release the following year. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. Anything worth anything has got to be that way. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. You didnt make another record for ten years after that. Schon was like fifteen years old when he joined Santana. Neal did a solo album way before I was thinking about it, with Jan Hammer. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. AD: Oh yeah.
