Bal d'Afrique by Byredo is a Oriental Woody fragrance for women and men. The latter two are smokey, resinous, and amber-heavy. Sounds simple, but something in this triggered a strong negative reaction in me. I seem to be have the same problem with other Byredo scents as well. i think i get lemon and something warm and slightly sweet...maybe black currant and amber? Then the woody notes and the Vetiver shines as the dominant note. Like all perfumes, though, I gave it a few chances by spraying it on under different conditions and have found that it unfolds the most pleasantly at night (or when the sky is overcast) and under 7°C - the "pineapple flower" sort of mellows down to a more golden version of itself. It’s quite light and very wearable. And is it clean and inoffensive enough? I tried this before, likely when I lived in Minnesota, and wasn't overly impressed. The Byredo scent line offers a decent quality mid-range perfume. Not because of the quasi feminine vibe, but mainly for the similarities with old AVON perfumery. A citrus-y vetiver was basically all I could smell, and props to the longevity because it followed me around all day. But there's a definite family likeness in the way the fruit notes come out, almost overripe and altogether delicious, which must be characterestic of how Byredo does them - I'm not complaining! EDIT: I am currently wearing BR90: Pure White from Banana Republic's Icon Collection, and it is close to (but not quite) a dupe of Bal D'Afrique but with an added tea note and toned down florals.
